You’ve joined the lengthy midnight queues and probably played GTAIV until mum came knocking with your morning cuppa. But have you bought the best version of the game?

Depends on how you measure best, we suppose. Pre-order anecdotes put the PS3 version ahead of the Xbox 360 game by a factor of 3:1 in certain UK retailers, so if you’re digging the former you may well have made the popular choice. Then again if you’ve bought a PS3 to play the game you’re also a substantial chunk of change out of pocket compared to those who plumbed for the basic Xbox package.

And then there’s visual superiority. Interweb enthusiasts with too much time on their hands claim to have measured one version against the other and have arrived at the somewhat startling conclusion that the PS3 outing runs at 630p resolution compared to the 720p Xbox 360 game. Will you notice such differences in crispness? Probably not, although the same dudes reckon the PS3 version still edges it due to superior processing effects.

All that aside the Xbox 360 game still has the overall advantage in our book. Xbox LIVE is an inherently superior way to enjoy the game’s multiplayer modes. Oh, and there are those exclusive downloadable episodes in prospect too. They’re due this autumn, as Microsoft has just confirmed. Sadly there’s no confirmation of what they are, how much they’ll cost and how much actual gameplay they’ll add to the inimitable GTAIV experience.

More on all that soon, we suppose, and we wouldn’t be altogether surprised if Sony announces a few exclusive extras of it its own in th not too distant future. Meantime, then, there’s only one way to settle which version is best – FIGHT!
