When Nintendo president, Satoru Iwata, stated that Wii sales were in an “unhealthy” state he surely wasn’t kidding! Read these latest weekly Japanese hardware sales figures and weep. Or should that be Wiip? Whatever the case it’s fair to say that the Wii is getting its motion-sensitive behind veritably handed to it right now. And not just by the resurgent Playstation 3 either – the PSP and even Nintendo’s own DSi are also lining up to give it a kicking. Witness the unfitness (last week’s sales in brackets): PSP - 40,886 (48,118) Delving into the annals of recent history we see that Wii sales have been swilling around the toilet for some time, and haven’t actually broken the 20K barrier since the beginning of February. Things have been on a determinedly downward trajectory for the last four weeks, though, and this latest figure represents an all-time low for the console. So what’s it all about? Sure, times are turbulent and rival hardware sales have been yo-yoing lately. But the way things have been going for Wii you’ve got to wonder whether, in Japan at least, Nintendo has finally sold a Wii to everyone who wants one. Or, worse, that the Wii has fallen out of favour with Japanese gamers. As unthinkable as that might be, the Wii is not exactly over-blessed with attractive, hardware-selling new software at the moment. Roll on Wii Sports Resort and the MotionPlus accessory, eh? Assuming they’re going to make any difference…
