Why is Rockstar’s Agent a PS3 exclusive? [PS3]

Monday June 8, 12:13 PM Why is Rockstar’s Agent a PS3 exclusive?

It’s a fair question – particularly when many, in fact most other big game franchises are taking the multiformat route to market. So, what’s it all about...?

The answer, it seems, is all about giving Agent the best possible start in life. Ben Feder from Rockstar’s parent company, Take Two Interactive, explains all:

“The trade-offs a publisher will typically make is, if you're platform-antagonistic, you get a larger install-base. You're platform exclusive when you get the right kind of support from first parties...”

“At this phase in the cycle, when you're trying to launch a new franchise, exclusivity can really help you launch the franchise. It can give you the kind of platform that you need to start exclusive, start in the right kind of way with the right kind of partner. Exclusivity does work.”

Well, we guess that makes some kind of sense. Put another way, Agent is a huge feather in Sony’s cap and we don’t doubt that they’ll give the game a massive push. However, Feder’s words ring slightly hollow when you remember that Rockstar’s biggest franchise, Grand Theft Auto IV, was launched simultaneously and very successfully on both Xbox 360 and PS3. So maybe when Feder talks about the “right kind of partner” he means the one with the deepest pockets!

Either way, we’re hopeful that Agent will launch on other gaming platforms in the longer term. Notice how Feder says “start exclusive”? That’s not us reading too much between the lines, is it?
