This week’s number one game is Grand Theft Auto IV – and how…! In fact, on the back of super-duper-massive sales, GTAIV is wa-ay more than a regular number one. Try these babies for size:

• Sales across both formats have almost cracked the 1 million mark – 926,000 copies sold by May 3rd, which is approximately £40 million in revenue.
• GTAIV accounts for 61.2% of the value of all games sold in the last five days.
• Total day one sale is now confirmed as 631,000 – i.e 22K more than was first thought.
• In the space of a week GTAIV has sold more units than every other title in 2007, excepting FIFA08, COD4 and Brain Training.
• It has outsold Wii Fit (itself no slouch in the sales dept.) at an astonishing rate of 9:1
• And all of that makes it the biggest all-formats number one ever.

Respect is certainly due. And by the looks of it that’s just what other games on this week’s countdown have been showing. Mario Kart pays tribute by shedding 61% of its sales and slipping to number four, while Wii Fit shows due deference by shifting 58% fewer copies than last week. That said we can’t help thinking that it might have done a little better if Nintendo had bothered to manufacture enough units to satisfy the still enormous demand. Harummph…

Elsewhere in the top ten it’s the usual case of musical chairs, albeit with the new arrival of Iron Man at eight and the departure of a couple of recent favourites. Witness:
