E3 06: Genesis Rising: The Universal Crusade Preshow Impressions

Just before the Electronic Entertainment Expo, Dreamcatcher Interactive announced that it was publishing Genesis Rising: The Universal Crusade, a futuristic real-time strategy game from Metamorf Studios. While details are still a bit scarce, we have some new screenshots and a first look at the game for you here.

Genesis Rising occurs in the far future, when the human race apparently controls most of the universe, thanks to an invention known as the organid. Organids are genetically engineered, organic ships that can adapt themselves to the strategies employed by the enemy. With these creations under their control, humanity keeps the entire universe under its control, by ruthlessly suppressing or destroying alien civilizations. The only part of the universe that remains unexplored is the Universal Heart, where the humans believe that all life and matter originated. Under the command of Captain Iconah, players will attempt to penetrate the Universal Heart and find out what secrets it contains.

In addition to the plot details, Dreamcatcher let slip some of the gameplay aspects. Apparently, the organid concept lets you modify your units on the fly, including their shape and graphical representation. And while the game is being billed as an RTS, Metamorf is apparently also including aspects of role-playing and adventure games, such as with real-time diplomacy and trading. Only time will tell whether or not the game will live up to its billing, but we'll have more details on Genesis Rising as it approaches its September 2006 release date.
