TGS 2003Mojib-Ribbon Impressions

Sony is showing off the follow-up to the cult favorite PlayStation game vib-ribbon at Tokyo Game Show 2003. While vib-ribbon took your favorite CDs and turned the audio into new levels, Mojib-Ribbon does the same thing with Japanese text.

The most noticeable thing about Mojib-Ribbon is its graphical style. The first game went for an incredibly simple, almost vector graphics-like look. The new game, being based on Japanese text, goes for an art style that has a calligraphic look to it, making the entire game appear to be drawn by a series of hand-painted brush strokes. Even the game's main character has this look.

While the Japanese text in the game makes the gameplay more dependant on knowing written Japanese, the gameplay appears to be mostly the same. Your character walks and text scrolls beneath his feet. Occasionally there are blank spots in the text, and this is the point where you'll press specific buttons to fill in the gaps. There is a rhythm in involved here, as well, so you'll have to time your button presses carefully.

Mojib-Ribbon appears to still be on track for a 2003 release in Japan. But given the game's utter dependence on Japanese text--which you'll be able to feed to the game to make your own levels via the game's online support--don't expect to see this game leave Japan for other markets anytime soon.
