E3 06: Untitled Naughty Dog Game First Look
LOS ANGELES--Though Naughty Dog is best known for its irreverent Jak & Daxter series, its forthcoming PlayStation 3 game looks like a decided change of pace. Seemingly an homage to full-throttle action movies from the '80s, this visually impressive game seems to combine elements of recent hits such as Far Cry and Prince of Persia. Though shown only briefly in trailer form (as part of a lengthy montage of never-before-seen PS3 titles), the game boasted some highly lifelike animation and a very maneuverable main character--a dexterous young man apparently fighting for his life in a jungle environment. The main character doesn't seem to be a fighter by nature, in his T-shirt, jeans, and sneakers. Apparently he's a treasure hunter--like a male Lara Croft. Or a young Indiana Jones. He's got some effective martial arts moves at his disposal, as when he deftly disarms one native fighter and punches another hard in the face. The trailer is clearly intended to show the variety of actions available to the player and also some of the environments--not just jungle but ancient pyramids.
The footage lasts barely a minute or two but shows the character performing a variety of moves and using several realistic weapons, such as shotguns and pistols. At one point, he forcefully kicks down a door and also pulls off a number of death-defying gymnastic leaps. He's forced to seek cover behind stone columns as assorted gunmen fire away.
While the footage flies by very quickly, a surprising level of detail is apparent in the environments, the characters, and animation. It's a compelling look at the type of game the PlayStation 3 is aiming to offer. We look forward to providing more coverage of this game as we learn more information. For starters, what do we call this thing?
