Created by one of videogames’ most revered designers, with music from one of Japan’s hippest producers, Lumines offers a smooth blend of classic puzzle gameplay with VIP club vibes. Just as Tetris became the reason to own a Game Boy, Lumines could be the essential PSP companion.

At its heart Lumines is a block-based, ‘Tetris-style’ puzzle game that anyone can understand: squares, comprising of four smaller squares, drop into a well. You can rotate and speed up the rate of descent of the squares as they tumble. Each of the smaller squares can be one of two colours, and if you match at least four to make a block, that block dissolves. Occasionally you can create special blocks that dissolve all similar-coloured squares on the screen. In every situation, the more squares you can vanish in one cleverly constructed combo the higher the points you receive – and the bigger the adrenaline buzz!
There are 24 levels, each individually themed by music and special effects. And the more you play, the more you’ll unlock to become the envy of your friends. There are four gameplay modes, laying down time- or purely skill-based challenges for single players, and assorted duel set-ups for two-player games via Wi-Fi connection.
A Yahoo! UK favourite, Lumines is the one game we can’t ignore because it’s so simple, but infinitely playable. Its genius, beyond the cleverly designed puzzle game at its core, is how wonderfully (and hypnotically!) the visuals and music complement the action. Everything on screen starts to shimmer and pulse, while the music also responds dynamically to your performance – if you’re doing well this all helps elevate your mind to a state of euphoria. Just about the only downside is that you may wind up grinning like a loon in the local ‘greasy spoon’, attracting the wrong kind of attention!
