Metal Gear Ac!d is stage-based, each area presented as a series of objectives to be completed as efficiently as possible. Your aim in every scenario is to plan ahead, but be prepared to act instantaneously, using a turn-based card system. If you’re familiar with trading card games, you’ll know that what you choose to take with you into each battle defines your overall strategy – once you’ve committed, you must do the best with what you’ve got.

Every card in the game has a unique function, relating to movement, attack or defence – all contributing to Snake’s effectiveness. Additional cards are found within each stage, so Snake emerges better equipped every time he survives. He is also graded at the end of each stage for economy of force (resulting in conservation of supplies), and success at remaining unseen. Points are awarded according to the grade, and these are traded in for more cards. The savvier you are, the tougher Snake becomes.

While the Metal Gear series is famed for its cinematic qualities, it is most deeply esteemed for intelligent ideas. Admittedly we didn’t expect such a radical treatment from Konami, but Ac!d still feels like Metal Gear, is perfectly suited to the handheld format, while keeping fans engrossed with its classy side story. Don’t let the ‘trading card’ theme scare you away – think of it as fast-paced decision-making that enables Snake to do his job. The action still looks fantastic, with dramatic cut-scenes too. You’ll also find replay value exceptionally high because the cards present so many alternatives to any situation.
