Unlike DVDs, UMDs don’t come loaded with extras, but who needs commentaries and clips when you have films as cool as these on the go?
xXx
Starring: Vin Diesel
If ever there was a movie that was just like video game, it’s xXx, so it’s quite apt that Sony chose this particular title to release for its new PlayStation. Bringing the spy genre bang up to date, the movie follows the adventures of newly recruited agent xXx, who lurches from one high octane escapade to another. Vin Diesel, he of the huge arms, is perfect for the role of extreme sports athlete turned spy, physically perfect (who else could look as good in a vest?) and actually quite funny.

A Knight's Tale
Starring: Heath Ledger
Tony Robinson and his telly Time Team wouldn’t be able to unearth anything historical in this medieval movie, but who cares about that when you have the gorgeous Heath Ledger and some jousting to look at? Even though Heath is the star of this tale about a peasant who takes on the identity of his dead master, it’s Paul Bettany as Chaucer (yes, he of The Canterbury Tales fame) who really shines. Chaucer helps pass off the young peasant as a real knight by forging some documents and teaching him the proper etiquette required to sport a suit of armour. Ultimately, it’s a tale about good beating evil and love winning the day, but it’s still extremely pleasant to watch.

The League Of Extraordinary Gentlemen
Starring: Sean Connery
This should have been one extraordinary movie. You can tick off all the elements required – big star, great story, good effects – however, it falls somewhat short of the cult Allan Moore graphic novel upon which it’s based. The premise is fantastic – in an alternative Victorian age, a group of famous fictional characters (which include Dorian Gray and The Invisible Man) team up on a secret mission. Sean Connery certainly belies his septuagenarian status as the dashing hero of the peace Allan Quatermain, and in fact, the rest of the cast perform also well. Somehow though, this adaptation fails to live up what it could have been and instead of a corker of an action movie, turns into an idiotic mess.

Charlie’s Angels: Full Throttle
Starring: Cameron Diaz
Those bootylicious Angels return for a second round of butt-kicking, high explosive action in this sequel. Prepare to leave your cynical and serious head behind before you slip this UMD into your PSP – it’s a silly, yet enjoyable, MTV-ride of a movie. The plus points definitely have to be the very gorgeous Angels – Diaz, Barrymore and Liu – and the often hilarious action sequences. Oh, and how can you not love Demi Moore showing those young things how to look hot in a bikini? Director McG can’t resist references to the popular culture that made him so big, but rather than detract from the movie, the various cameos and movie references make this romp of a flick even more fun.
